Pop up showers & storms NW this afternoon; more rain enters this evening, continuing Tuesday

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Good afternoon and Happy Monday everyone! Fog burned off across Maine throughout the morning, with good visibility at 10+ miles this afternoon. Skies are partly to mostly cloudy with building cloud cover across the south & west. Pop up showers & storms are developing across northwestern Maine. Temperatures vary from the low 60s to mid 70s as of 12:15pm. Dewpoints are slightly sticky and winds are on the lighter side.

Overcast skies will build ahead of our next low-pressure system this afternoon. A few pop-up showers and storms will continue to develop across Northwestern portions of Maine. Areas along the interstate and to the southeast will likely stay dry throughout the day. Then later this evening, the next low-pressure system will enter, with rain working into Southern Maine and along the Midcoast by sunset into the start of the night. High temperatures will vary from the mid 60s to mid 70s today with slightly sticky dewpoints. SSE gusts will reach 15-25 mph.

The low-pressure system will track across Southern New England into the Gulf of Maine tonight. Rain will become widespread and heavy at times across the interstate and coast all the way into Downeast Maine. Showers will reach as far North as communities from Millinocket and Houlton by sunrise on Tuesday. Skies will be overcast with fog developing once again. Low temperatures will vary throughout the 50s with SSE gusts reaching 15-25 mph.

Just a few showers will reach far Northwestern portions of Maine with this system. Skies will remain cloudy with rain throughout Tuesday morning for most along the interstate and coast. Fog is also likely. By midday, showers and a few pockets of heavier rain will be confined to areas along the interstate and to the southeast, as precipitation peels out of Northern and Western Maine. Showers will continue along the Coast and across Downeast locations during the afternoon while the rest of the state starts to dry with sunshine developing from northwest to southeast throughout the later afternoon and evening hours. By the later evening, the entire system will wrap up with sunshine developing for most. High temperatures will remain cooler, only topping off from the low 60s to mid 70s. Dewpoints will become sticky. SE to NNW gusts will be a bit breezy in the morning, reaching 20-25 mph.

Rainfall Monday evening through Tuesday afternoon will accumulate between 1-2 inches along the coast, with a few isolated coastal spots capable of reaching a little over 2 inches of rain. Most interior communities along the interstate will receive between 0.5 to 1 inch of rain. Areas across northwestern Maine will receive the lightest totals, under 0.5 inches. This added moisture may trigger more isolated flooding in spots where lots of rain already fell on Sunday. Low lying and flood prone areas will likely see ponding or minor flooding.

Conditions will become much drier and nicer for most of the state on Wednesday and Thursday. Skies will be partly to mostly sunny for interior and coastal communities. However, more clouds are anticipated to the north/northwest with some showers and storms possible during the afternoon on both days. High temps will vary from the upper 60s to low 80s with slightly sticky dewpoints. Winds gusts will be a little breezy on Wednesday, with gusts reaching 20-25 mph, before lightening up on Thursday.

By Friday, precipitation will become widespread once again, with cloudier skies and rain showers in the morning turning into a steady rain with the chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon. Temperatures will cool a few degrees with dewpoints becoming sticky.

Smaller shower and storm chances are possible next weekend, with precipitation most likely across Northern Maine.

WEDNESDAY: Highs from upper 60s to upper 70s. Partly to mostly sunny. Cloudier up North with PM showers & storms developing. Slightly sticky dewpoints. NW gusts reach 20-25 mph.

THURSDAY: Highs from upper 60s to low 80s. Partly to mostly sunny. Cloudier NW with few PM showers & storms developing. Slightly sticky dewpoints. NW to South gusts reach 15-20 mph.

FRIDAY: Highs from mid 60s to mid 70s. Cloudier skies. AM showers give way to a steadier PM rain with thunderstorms developing. Sticky dewpoints. SSE gusts reach 20-25 mph.

SATURDAY: Highs from upper 60s to low 80s. Mostly cloudy skies, at times partly cloudy. Cloudier up North with shower & storm chances. Sticky dewpoints. WSW gusts reach 15-20 mph.
