AI-powered scams making it harder for Americans to spot fraud
New data shows 73% of people report being targeted by fraudsters as AI makes detection harder
(InvestigateTV) — A majority of Americans say they have been targeted by financial scams, according to a recent survey, with incidents climbing in the past year.
Sarah Foster with Bankrate said 73 percent of people report they have been targeted by a financial scam or fraudster. About 40 percent of those happened in the past year, up from 34 percent last year.
Foster said many Americans are taking precautions, including changing passwords often, using different passwords for every account and setting up two-factor authentication.
“The fear here is whether that will ever be enough. And I think there’s really something to be said here about the rise of AI, how that’s not only making it easier for scammers to target people. It’s also making it even harder to tell if a fraudster is even a fraudster,” Foster said.
Foster said one mistake can result in a bank account being wiped out.
She said people who fall for scams should report issues to the Federal Trade Commission to help others avoid becoming victims.
People can also place a fraud alert on their credit reports or lock their accounts if needed.
