Wet conditions for many today; brighter and warmer to start the work week

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Good afternoon, and happy Sunday everyone. Showers continue to fall across Maine from the Capital region and Midcoast through Downeast locations and all the way up to the St. John Valley and Northern Woods. Temperatures vary throughout the 40s and low 50s with reduced visibility for much of Maine due to the rain combining with some patchy fog.

Rain will continue across much of Maine this afternoon with skies remaining overcast. Showers will likely taper off in the evening, before working across the New Brunswick border shortly after sunset. A few scattered showers are possible to the north & west, but some breaks in clouds will also develop this evening, with a partly to mostly cloudy end to the day. NNW gusts will reach 20-30 mph.

Rainfall accumulations will vary drastically today. Totals Downeast will likely range between a half an inch to an inch, while areas to the west will see under a tenth of an inch, if any rain at all.

Tonight, cloudy skies with a few showers lingering to the east at sunset will give way to mostly clear skies into Monday morning. Low temps will vary throughout the 30s with NW to West gusts reaching 20-25 mph. Some patchy frost is possible to the northwest where temps are at or just below freezing.

Monday will provide the return of sunshine for many, with temperatures also on the rise. Skies will be sunny to start across northern, central, and eastern Maine. However, clouds will build from the west throughout the morning, so by the late morning to midday hours, skies will be partly to mostly cloudy with a few very light and scattered showers possible. Clouds and any showers won’t last long though, as skies will be partly to mostly sunny by the evening hours. High temps will vary from the low 50s to mid 60s with breezy WSW gusts reaching 20-30 mph. A Small Craft Advisory is likely offshore.

Tuesday will be the warmest day of the week, with highs warming up from the upper 50s to mid 70s. Skies will be partly to mostly sunny. Winds will be breezy, reaching 25-35 mph out of the SSW. However, a frontal system will start to enter northwestern Maine later in the afternoon and evening. Due to all the daytime heating and potential instability in the atmosphere, a few thunderstorms are possible in the evening hours to the northwest with clouds building in. Locations along the interstate and to the southeast will likely get by with dry conditions on Tuesday.

The frontal system that may provide thunderstorms across northwestern Maine on Tuesday evening, will likely become widespread across Maine on Wednesday. Skies are anticipated to be cloudy with rain showers across inland and northern locations becoming more consistent and widespread throughout the day, impacting the coast during the afternoon. Highs will take a hit, from the low 50s to low 60s with SSW gusts remaining a bit breezy, reaching 20-30 mph.

Thursday is now starting to trend on the drier side, with the bulk of Wednesday’s low-pressure system likely working out by sunrise. Skies will be mostly cloudy with a few rain showers possible in spots, most probable along the coast. However, another low will fill in later Thursday evening into Thursday night, resulting in more rain across Maine into Friday morning. Temps on Thursday and Friday will be in the 50s for most.

SUNDAY: Highs from low 40s to low 50s. Cloudy skies with rain East & on the coast. Scattered showers farther West with partly to mostly cloudy PM. NNW gusts reach 20-30 mph.

MONDAY: Highs from low 50s to mid 60s. Mix of sun & clouds. More midday clouds with few scattered showers possible. WSW gusts reach 20-30 mph.

TUESDAY: Highs from upper 50s to mid 70s. Partly to mostly sunny. Mostly cloudy PM northwest with showers & thunderstorms possible. SSW gusts reach 25-35 mph.

WEDNESDAY: Highs from low 50s to low 60s. Cloudy with rain showers, becoming widespread by the afternoon hours. SSW gusts reach 20-30 mph.

THURSDAY: Highs from low 50s to low 60s. Mostly cloudy with a few rain showers possible, most probable along the coast. NW gusts reach 15-20 mph.

FRIDAY: Highs from upper 40s to upper 50s. Mostly cloudy with rain showers possible. Few PM partly cloudy spots on coast. NW gusts reach 20-30 mph.
