Simple ways to save money on gas
WalletHub: Gas prices peaked at $5.03 per gallon in 2022
(InvestigateTV) — The average household spends about $2,400 a year on gas, and costs are continuing to rise.
John Kiernan, managing editor at the personal finance company WalletHub, said one of the best ways to cut fuel costs is to use a strong gas rewards credit card. He said the top cards can offer as much as 6 percent cash back on gas purchases.
Kiernan also pointed to gas station loyalty programs, which can help drivers save a few cents per gallon. Some grocery stores partner with gas stations as well, giving shoppers another way to earn discounts at the pump.
Warehouse clubs like Costco, BJ’s and Sam’s Club can also be good places to get gas.
Kiernan said savings can also come from the way people drive.
“Driving slowly is one thing. For every five miles per hour, you go over 50, it’s equivalent to pay in about $0.25 more per gallon of gas,” Kiernan said.
He also said drivers should avoid excessive idling. Citing the Department of Energy, Kiernan said idling too long can burn about half a gallon of gas per hour.
Air conditioning can also take a toll on fuel efficiency. The Department of Energy has found that using the A/C on very hot days can reduce fuel economy by as much as 25 percent.
At higher speeds, Kiernan said, it also helps to keep the windows up because open windows create extra drag.
Drivers may also want to clear out unnecessary weight from their vehicles. Kiernan said every extra 100 pounds can lower gas mileage by about 2 percent.
