ST. PAUL, Minn. (KBJR/Gray News) - Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar has filed paperwork to run for governor in the state, according to filing documents on Thursday.

A source close to the senator said the filing “represents a preliminary step necessary for any candidate considering a run,” and Klobuchar is expected to announce her plans in the coming days.

The filing comes after Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz announced earlier this month that he would not seek a third term amid mounting scrutiny over fraud allegations.

Klobuchar first ran for the Senate in 2006, becoming Minnesota’s first woman U.S. senator.

In 2019, the Democratic politician announced a presidential candidacy before suspending her campaign and endorsing Joe Biden in 2020.

Minnesota has recently been at the center of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, where tensions have run high following a fatal shooting involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer a few weeks ago.
