Classes cancelled at RSU 13 following student’s death
RSU 13 also noted that there will be an increased law enforcement presence at the school over the next week.
ROCKLAND, Maine (WABI) - RSU 13 will cancel regular classes on Monday, November 24 and Tuesday November 25th following the death of a student who was hit and killed by a school bus Friday afternoon.
In a letter to families, Superintendent John McDonald said “We know this has been a very difficult weekend for our students and for the broader community. At this time, we are announcing that Monday November 24th and Tuesday November 25th will not be regular school days. We look forward to bringing all students back into their familiar environments on Monday December 1st to restore a sense of routine and continue to provide support."
The South School and Oceanside High School will have their doors open to families from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. for any children, staff or families to process emotions.
All other schools in the district will be closed.
RSU 13 also noted that there will be an increased law enforcement presence at the school over the next week.
In the letter MCDonald said, “We are also aware that concerning posts are circulating on social media, which may make families and students feel uneasy stepping into our schools. There will be an increased law enforcement presence at these two schools this week, and we are also welcoming additional personnel from neighboring districts and agencies to support students and staff.
We will continue to communicate promptly if any changes to this current plan become necessary."
The school says that they look forward to bringing students and staff back to school on Monday, December 1st to restore a sense of routine.
“We encourage all parents and guardians to please remind your students that it is okay to ask for help from adults in their lives,” McDonald wrote.
The student was struck at the intersection of Eliza Steele Drive and Broadway just before 2:30 p.m., officials said Friday.
Rockland Police say the child was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries and was later flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland where the child died of their injuries.
RSU 13 said they are working with law enforcement and emergency responders as they investigate.
The crash remains under investigation.
The family has set up a GoFundMe which has raised more than $32,000, so far.
