Calais Regional Hospital has filed for bankruptcy protection citing the $25 million it owes to nearly 1,900 creditors, according to Bangor Daily News.

According to annual tax fillings, the hospital has lost money every year since 2007.

Officials say the 25 bed hospital will remain open during the court process, which is expected to last a year.

About 275 people work at the facility, making it one of Washington County's largest employers.

Hospital administrators say no layoffs are planned.

The bankruptcy filing comes 11 days after nursing staff voted to put the option of a strike on the table in contract negotiations, which have been going on for nearly a year.
