BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - With just three days to go until Election Day, political groups are rallying canvass volunteers together for one last push toward the finish line.

And all eyes remain on the controversial U.S. Senate race between former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson and incumbent Sen. Susan Collins.

Jackson joined the Maine Democratic Party in Bangor on Saturday morning for its “Get out the Vote” event, designed to train volunteers to get out in their local neighborhoods to speak to voters ahead of the election.

In his speech, Jackson thanked volunteers and reiterated his campaign promises of prioritizing working-class Mainers above corporate interests.

Party leaders emphasized that face-to-face conversations remain the most effective tool in the campaign’s final hours.

“Here in the state of Maine, we know we’re all like one big little community. And where you might hear or see news articles and get reports secondhand, when you can talk to somebody that you know and you already trust, that’s a better way to get information sometimes. And you get to share opinions in a safe space. And I think that that’s really what makes door knocking and canvassing one of the most essential parts of any good campaign,” said Imke Schessler, vice chair of the Maine Democratic Party.

“It’s really not about me at all and that’s okay. I don’t care, because what I want is what I’ve wanted for 30 more years. I want a government that fights for us, works for us. I want a government that does Medicare for all. I want a government that’s staying up for everyday people instead of the billionaire class that we have right now,” said Jackson.

Voters are encouraged to make their plan to vote ahead of Election Day: while early voting in Maine has ended, same-day voter registration is available at polling locations on Tuesday. Absentee ballots must be received by local municipal clerks by 8 p.m. on Nov. 3.
