Maine filmmakers shoot latest project at Orono movie theater
ORONO, Maine (WABI) - If you’ve ever had a dream of being in a movie, this week may be your chance!
Black Bear Cinemas in Orono is doubling as a film set until next Friday.
The movie theater is the backdrop for the second feature-length film from the Cassidy Brothers, an independent film duo hailing from South Portland.
After screening their first movie Childish Things at Black Bear in September, brothers Nick and Cash Cassidy have returned. This time, bringing with them many Maine-based crew members and actors, including Xander Berkeley of Walking Dead fame among other projects.
Making the project as Maine-made as possible is a priority for the pair, to help put the state, and the creatives within it, on the filmmaking map.
“Just really trying to hammer this home because Maine needs more of it,” describes Cash Cassidy. “Maine should have more film in it.”
Currently unnamed, their latest project is an improvised mock-umentary that follows movie theater employees who, after finding out their theater is in danger of closing, go to crazy lengths to save their workplace.
For the Cassidy brothers, the movie is a love letter to theaters, filmmaking and their home state of Maine.
Nick Cassidy says the partnership with Black Bear Cinemas speaks to the message of their mission: “It captures the spirit of what we’re doing as indie filmmakers. It’s like an independent theater that’s really just like doing it their own way, which we appreciate.”
The film is expected to release in September.
In the meantime, you can watch Childish Things and keep up with their current project through their website or Instagram.
