Study shows UMaine public medical school, while needed, is not financially feasible
ORONO, Maine (WABI) - A consulting firm says a medical school at the University of Maine is not financially feasible at this time.
However, a survey administered by that firm, Tripp Umbach, found Maine needs a medical school, and it should be part of the University of Maine System.
According to UMaine, the majority of those who took part in the survey agree a medical school would help address physician workforce issues and improve care in under served areas.
Tripp Umbach says a medical school is not currently suitable given start-up costs along with the money needed to sustain the school’s operations.
The firm also notes limited medical residency capacity and financial constraints on health care systems in Maine.
