AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - A rally was held in Augusta to protest tax cuts for the wealthy and their potential impact on programs in Maine.

“We are gathering to protest the massive tax cuts for the wealthy that are being proposed in Congress. Tax cuts by the way that are being paid for by massive cuts to the services that the rest of us rely on. We’re here advocating not just Congress at the federal level reject these cuts, but also that we adopt solutions at the state level that give us the resources we need to help working families thrive,” explained Evan LeBrun, Executive Director, Mainers for Working Families.

As taxes are paid in April, they made it a point to gather on Tax Day.

‘Mainers are known for being hard workers, and people just want their fair share of what the government is supposed to do for them. I saw a good sign that says, ‘We deserve a government that cares, not tax cuts for billionaires’," said Mary McCann-Baker, who attended the rally.

Those in attendance called on Maine politicians to represent their interests.

“We’re planning to head to Susan Collins’s office to make sure she can hear our voices on this issue. It’s critical that our federal delegation votes the right way on this. This is a life-or-death issue for folks that rely on these services,” added LeBrun.

“The wealthy benefit much more in our country from our tax system, and we’re trying to make sure that our representatives in Congress know that Maine people are watching and that we really need them to fight and advocate for our wellbeing. And that means taking care of everyday Mainers and not pandering to the most privileged people of our country,” stated Maine Equal Justice Community Organizer, Allina Diaz.
