Mother breastfeeding 3-week-old son admits to smoking meth days before his death, complaint says

PIERCE COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU/Gray News) - The parents of a 3-week-old baby from Wisconsin are facing charges after he died from methamphetamine toxicity.

Jessie Lee Kittelson, 23, and Taylor Jae Olson, 26, are both charged with first degree reckless homicide and chronic neglect of a child with the consequence as death, according to a criminal complaint.

The complaint says a Pierce County sergeant was dispatched March 14 to the town of Trimbelle for a report of a 3-week-old child not breathing. When he arrived, he found the baby boy appearing pale and blueish with a dark substance around his mouth and nose.

The baby was not breathing and did not have a pulse. CPR was done, but Ellsworth paramedics were not able to revive him.

An autopsy later revealed the 3-week-old died of methamphetamine toxicity.

When Kittelson was interviewed by law enforcement, she said she breastfed her son. She allegedly admitted to using methamphetamine throughout her pregnancy and that she had smoked it three days before her son’s death.

Kittelson allegedly said she “pumped and dumped” her breast milk supply for 48 hours and used breast milk she had stored when she was “clean” to feed her baby. She said she was confused about how the victim was exposed to meth because she did not know what she did wrong.

She also allegedly used Google to search for how long meth stays in breast milk.

Olson allegedly admitted he’d buy the meth the couple would use.

If convicted, Kittelson and Olson face up to 60 years in prison. They are scheduled for an initial appearance in Pierce County court on Sept. 2.
