ROCKLAND Maine (WABI) - A bus driver charged with manslaughter will not spend time in jail after a 12-year-old student was hit and killed in Rockland last year.

According to the Midcoast Villager, following a judicial settlement conference on Monday, the manslaughter charge against 65-year-old Jeffrey Colburn will be dropped in exchange for a civil violation.

Colburn was indicted in January and had pleaded not guilty.

A formal change-of-plea hearing is scheduled for next Tuesday.

The crash happened last November when 12-year-old Brayden Callahan was hit by a school bus while walking in a crosswalk.

An NTSB investigation confirmed Callahan was also run over by the vehicle.

In exchange for dropping the manslaughter charge, Colburn will admit to a civil traffic violation of committing a motorist infraction that results in death.

According to the publication, the maximum sentence under this violation is a four-year license suspension and a $5,000 fine.
