Portland wants eviction moratorium because of ICE activity in Maine
PORTLAND, Maine (WMTW) - Governor Janet Mills says she will look into a request from the city of Portland to enact a moratorium on evictions for up to 60 days.
Portland City Council voted yes on a resolution Monday night that asks the Governor to stop evictions to protect public health and housing stability.
The council’s unanimous decision comes after the Department of Homeland Security conducted a weeklong U.S. Customs and Enforcement operation in the state. DHS said more than 200 people were arrested during that operation.
“The Governor recognizes that no person should face eviction because of the terror ICE inflicted on Maine communities,” her office said in a statement. “Her office will review the resolution and remain in contact with municipal officials, philanthropic organizations, and others as Maine people work to support one another and heal in the wake of ICE’s reckless actions.”
More than 500 Portland residents petitioned the city council to take action.
The resolution says some residents haven’t been showing up to work due to fears of running into ICE.
“Many Portland residents are currently experiencing heightened economic and social disruption, including disruptions to employment, income stability, and daily mobility, which have increased the risk that households may fall behind on rent through no fault of their own,” the resolution said.
Because Portland cannot enact a statewide eviction moratorium itself, officials are asking Mills to protect vulnerable tenants at this time.
