Gov. Mills speaks at Maine Climate Council meeting

AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - The Maine Climate Council meets on Dec. 1 each year to discuss climate action from the past year and what else can be done in the future.

A lot of the discussion in Augusta on Monday had to do with the state’s four-year climate plan titled Maine Won’t Wait.

Along with panels about building resilient communities and opportunities for 2026, there was networking and collaborative sessions to work as a group.

Among the speakers at the meeting was Gov. Mills who highlighted clean air and water, affordable energy, and decreasing the reliance on fossil fuels.

Mills also says climate action should not be seen as a partisan issue.

“Republicans as well as Democrats down through history have recognized the great need to protect our environment. It was Richard Nixon who invented the E.P.A,” said Mills. “Our planet is neither blue nor red. It is the home of all peoples, and it is the responsibility of all peoples and all governments to preserve it for future generations. Guided by the goals of the Climate Action Plan, we will keep working to make efficient and cost-effective heat pumps, weatherization programs, all these things available for Maine people.“
