‘It was scary’: 13-year-old helps rescue mom, 2 siblings, other driver after head-on crash

BROWN COUNTY, Ohio. (WXIX/Gray News) - A 13-year-old girl in Ohio stepped into action and helped rescue her family after a head-on crash.

“It was scary. I didn’t know what to do,” said Kallee Childers.

Kallee, along with her mother, Amanda Johnson, and her two siblings, were traveling to Brown County on June 13 when their car was hit head-on.

According to state troopers, the other driver was traveling at an “unsafe speed”, hydroplaned and overcorrected before hitting them.

Kallee says her mom noticed the other driver losing control.

“The wind was knocked out of me, so I didn’t want to get up. I wanted to sit there and my mom was like, ‘Kallee, you have to get out of the car before the car blows up.’”

The 13-year-old said she then got up and helped her mother out, and then she was able to get her siblings out of the backseat.

Kallee then walked over to the other driver’s car and got her out too.

Her sister, 12-year-old Aubree, was seriously injured and remains at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital where she had another surgery Friday. Her brother, 10-year-old Brantlee, broke four fingers and has a fractured hip.

Surprisingly, Kallee says she has minor injuries. Their mother has several broken bones and other injuries that required surgery.

The family has a GoFundMe set up to help with medical expenses.

It’s unclear if any charges are being filed in this crash.
