PORTLAND, Maine (WMTW) - A drop of blood from a finger - could help more women survive the most dangerous forms of breast cancer.

The groundbreaking work is being done at the University of New England.

The blood-based biomarker test, could revolutionize diagnosis and treatment for patients with aggressive cancers like triple-negative breast cancer and ovarian cancer.

“This would be a game changer. And it could be a useful tool for clinicians to have in the point of care testing for early screening and especially under minority populations. It would be a useful tool to have under the rural setting where in patients would have had a hard time coming, or having access to a diagnostic center,” said UNE Professor, Dr. Srinidi Mohan.

The team behind the test is working to get FDA approval.

They hope to have it available for patients and doctors within the next five years.
