Orono IGA hosted their annual Great Grocery Grab

ORONO, Maine (WABI) - It seems like the cost of food keeps going up. But one lucky shopper just got $1,000 worth of groceries for only a buck!

Orono’s annual version of Supermarket Sweep played out again Thursday morning.

“I was just thinking in my head just, ‘What do I need to grab?’ You know? I didn’t want to grab a whole lot of just one product of the same thing. I wanted a variety of everything,” said Ann Lunt, raffle winner.

Lunt was the lucky winner of $1,000 to put toward anything she could fill her cart with in five minutes at Orono IGA on Stillwater Ave.

She won by purchasing a $1 raffle ticket.

“I really haven’t won too much over the years, so it was kind of nice. I’m local. I come in here all the time to shop,” said Lunt

The money collected during the fundraiser goes to the local Daughters of Isabella chapter. They run a food pantry that serves 80 local families, a number double what it used to be.

“This is money that we use for the entire year to buy the fresh fruits and vegetables for the pantry that we have located at Holy Family Church, so I mean it’s everything to us to take care of this in one big fundraiser,” said Janet Lepage, Daughters of Isabella Circle #428.

“Once a month we have a food pantry day where people can come in and take items that are donated. It helps them feed their families and themselves because the need is great,” said Dottie Poisson, Daughters of Isabella Circle #428.

Organizers say it wouldn’t be possible without the support of the IGA.

“We do a lot behind the scenes. We don’t do it for recognition. We just do it because it’s the right thing to do, and we’re great partners with the Holy Family and the Daughters of Isabella,” said Bob Craft, owner, Orono IGA.

As for Ann, she left it all on the floor. Literally.

Despite a dog food spill, Ann cleaned up -- and headed home to fill her freezer.

“Probably one of the better ones I’ve ever seen, and she wasn’t quite at the $1,000 so we we let her go back and she finished it up,” said Craft.

“I just want to say thank you very much to people at the IGA, and I appreciate your guys’s help and everything. And the ladies, of course, who sold the tickets. And I just had a grand time. I’ll probably be back in here in a couple hours to shop,” said Lunt.
