Massive fallen tree crushes Amazon delivery truck, trapping worker inside

PLAINFIELD, N.J. (WABC) - Mother Nature had no regard for Amazon’s delivery schedule, sending a crushing blow to one of the company’s box trucks – with one worker still inside.

A massive tree fell onto an Amazon delivery truck during Friday night storms in Plainfield, New Jersey, crushing the truck with enough force that neighbors initially feared a house had been hit.

“It sounded pretty bad. I thought it actually hit the house when I heard it. Yeah, it just sounded like an explosion pretty much,” said a witness named Ramon.

Witnesses said the truck’s driver had been out delivering packages when the tree came down, but a second worker was trapped inside.

Shatia Winston said another neighbor rushed in to help free the trapped worker.

“So, the neighbor that lives right next door came and was like, ‘Oh, you guys have a knife or something so I can cut it?’… and I got one of my kitchen knives. He cut the seat belt off and got him out, and he was walking, holding his stomach,” Winston said.

When the tree fell, it also brought down power lines and left more than a dozen customers without power. Meanwhile, other residents like Leonard King were waiting for deliveries when they got unexpected updates from Amazon.

“Saying that they attempted to make the delivery of my package and they ran into an issue. I’m guessing that was the issue,” King said.

An Amazon spokesperson released a statement Friday night saying, “This was a scary incident. We’re grateful that the Delivery Service Partner drivers are safe and to everyone who responded at the scene.”

Crews were working Saturday morning to remove the fallen tree.
