Bangor man pleads guilty to manslaughter
BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - A Bangor man has been sentenced to 11 years behind bars in connection with the shooting death of another man in Millinocket last year.
Forty-six-year-old Jason Mulligan pleaded guilty Tuesday morning to manslaughter.
Twenty-three-year-old Cameron Pelkey died after the shooting in March of 2020.
The sentencing was a joint recommendation from the prosecution and defense.
Mulligan’s attorney says they chose not to go to trial due to Mulligan and two others having been under the influence of drugs at the time of the shooting.
Family and friends of Pelkey gave impact statements to the court.
”I believe no one is perfect. We all make mistakes, for whatever reason, and you can be forgiven to an extent. But, this I feel I will never forgive because a life was taken so inconsiderably, in my opinion. For what, exactly, I’ll never know, but I do know my soulmate was taken, my best friend, my coworker,” said Maecie LaVoie, friend and coworker of Pelkey.
“Cameron was a good kid. He was smart, he was kind, and no parent should ever have to lose a kid. Especially a mother. I never meant for any of this to happen. I’m just so sorry,” Mulligan said.
Mulligan also pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of scheduled drugs, OUI, illegal possession of a firearm, theft by unauthorized taking, and violating the conditions of his release.
He was also sentenced to four years of probation and will pay $1,375 in restitution for Pelkey’s funeral expenses.
