ORONO, MAINE (WABI) - Joe Harasymiak is leaving the UMaine football program after spending three seasons as head coach and 4 years as an assistant for the Black Bears.

Coach H. taking a job with the University of Minnesota as a defensive assistant. The Gophers making the announcement official this afternoon. Coach Harasymiak will be teaming up again with Minnesota Defensive Coordinator Joe Rossi. The former Black Bears DC from 2008 to 2011 had coach H work for him in Orono.

Harasymiak went 20-15 in his 3 years as head coach. But will always be remembered for this past season's NCAA tournament run.

Ken Ralph is the new Athletic Director and will be making his first major hire. We asked him about his approach to finding a head coach....

“The big thing is for someone to really understand our culture. To understand some of the challenges we have at Maine,” says Maine Athletic Director Ken Ralph, “Do you understand the type of student we attract what we want to keep this momentum going. We feel like we’re in a good spot with this football program.”

A big loss for UMaine. A great job for coach H. He traveled to Minneapolis Thursday, he will coach in the Gophers bowl game on the 26th, and should be available for comment here sometime next week. In Orono, Eric Gullickson, WABI TV5 sports.
