Cleveland Indians donate thousands to Sockalexis project

BANGOR, MAINE (WABI) - Local writer Ed Rice has been at odds with the Cleveland Indians for decades for what he has been saying is a racist depiction of an Indian in Chief Wahoo.

Rice is in the process of raising money for a statue of the player the Indians were named after Louis Sockalexis of Old Town.

Today the Cleveland organization donated 10 thousand dollars to help fund the project.

Rice hopes to raise 80 to 100 thousand dollars to build the statue of Sockalexis which will be placed somewhere in Maine.
