Waterville City Council votes against asking Colby, Thomas for money to lower tax rates

WATERVILLE, Maine (WABI) - The Waterville City Council voted against a measure that would have asked two local colleges to pay millions of dollars to lower residents tax rates.

Councilors voted 4-1 against Tuesday night.

It was a petition put forward by Mark Andre, a candidate for the State Legislature.

It would have asked Colby and Thomas Colleges to contribute a combined 15-million dollars over the next five years.

Both school presidents were at the meeting.

Andre said that his plan is to continue collecting signatures and re-submit this petition to the newly seated council after the November election.
