AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - Maine has a severe nursing workforce crisis that's only increasing.

The University of Maine System hopes to solve that.

Wednesday they announced a five-year nursing workforce plan to double nursing enrollment from about 1900 students to nearly 4000 students.

The plan also intends to extend nursing education into rural Maine communities where it is highly needed right now.

"Although we face these kinds of challenges in just about every profession across the state, the one in nursing and healthcare is particularly acute, and we have to get this one right," says University of Maine System Chancellor James H. Page.

The initiative will also help provide some free nursing education.
