SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (WMTW) - The U.S. Coast Guard is encouraging safety on commercial fishing vessels.
On Friday, the guard showed off how it handles mayday calls from its command center in South Portland.
It also demonstrated lifesaving water rescue gear.
The Coast Guard stressing in these cold weather months, practicing safety should be a top priority for everyone on the water.
"Having an electronic position indicating radio beacon or epirb and having survival suits really saves their lives and if everyone did that there would be more lives saved," said Lieutenant Commander, Bill Burwell.
Friday's demonstration also featured an air rescue with a chopper from the Coast Guard Air Station in Cape Cod.
