Suspect who allegedly stole police car, leads officers on chase that ends in crash
Police say a man who stole a Dexter police cruiser Friday led them on a high speed chase in another car that ended when the car crashed in Dover-Foxcroft.
Police say it all began when 22-year-old Tyler Tibbetts was arrested on probation violations and multiple warrants.
They say Tibbetts was in handcuffs but slipped them around to his front and was able to steal the fully marked Dexter Police SUV.
Police say Tibbetts eventually abandoned the cruiser in Garland and stole another vehicle which they found Friday afternoon.
Lt. Sean Hashey of the Maine State Police said, "A pursuit ensued from there. The vehicle was spiked where it lost one of its front tires. And, eventually while traveling on 15 it left the roadway and went into some trees."
Tibbetts was flown to the hospital with serious injuries.
We do not know the extent of those injuries.
Police say he was alone.
We'll have more information as the investigation continues.
