A new transgender health program is expanding into Belfast.

Belfast Family Planning is now offering in-clinic transgender services in Waldo County through their Open Door program.

Open Door services include hormonal transition therapy and monitoring for transgender people, on-site self-injection lessons and referrals to specialty and community resources.

They offer the specialty services at their Lewiston and Waterville locations and health care providers say expanding the services is critical.

Julie Jenkins of Belfast Family Planning says, "We have a lot of people who are wanting to access these services and they have had to travel great distances. Some of them go as far as Boston, many of them go to Portland. So, to be able to offer clinics that are closer to them just makes a huge change for accessibility."

Insurance is accepted for covered services and Maine Family Planning offers a sliding fee scale for those without insurance.
