HOLDEN, Maine (WABI) - Get ready for some traffic pattern changes on on Route 1A in Holden.
The Maine DOT is looking to install a continuous 2-way left turn lane on two sections of the busy road.
Officials say records reveal a large number of rear-end crashes involving drivers trying to turn left on the road.
"There's two benefits here," said Robert Skehan, Director of the Office of Safety at Maine DOT. "There's the safety benefit for those. There's also the mobility benefit. When accidents do occur there, it blocks the road. Being an important corridor for us, with over 20,000 vehicles a day, it's not uncommon in an accident situation to have traffic backed up for a very long way."
Officials hope to start the project this summer.
