The Maine Department of Transportation has denied a request to build a roadside tombstone in Brunswick to honor hundreds of lobsters killed when a trucked rolled over last week.

PETA asked for permission for the memorial.

When the truck crashed 7,000 pounds of live lobster spilled on to the roadway.

In the letter PETA sent to the Maine DOT, the organization says the gravestone would read "In memory of the lobsters who suffered and died at this spot."

DOT responded, saying that all forms of signs are prohibited on that stretch of road because it is a controlled access highway.
