BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office encourages you to guard against scammers.

It’s why an officer was at Solstice Senior Living in Bangor Friday, with advice to help seniors protect themselves.

Seniors are often targets of IRS and sweepstake scams.

Penobscot County Sheriff's lieutenant James Ellis shared tips such as not sharing your personal information with anyone.

He explains a common scam in Penobscot County.
Ellis said, "You get a call there's a warrant for your arrest or you didn't show up for jury duty but you can take care of this if you send us 50 bucks that don't happen. So, we just need to people to be aware and to be cautious and just be smart so, they don't send their money away."

Ellis said if something sounds too good to be true, it is.

As always, if you believe you're being scammed, you can call your local law enforcement.
