Teamsters Protest Low Wages At The University of Maine

ORONO, Maine (WABI) University of Maine Union workers in the Service and Maintenance Department picketed on campus today.

They maintain buildings on all nine UMaine campuses.

They say they're being paid far below the median income.

Today's picketers are represented by a local Teamsters Union which says the workers are being treated like second-class citizens.

"We have skilled trade workers, plumbers, electricians, and carpenters that are paid in the 25th percentile which basically means a master electrician anywhere else in the state would start around $22 an hour. University of Maine, we start them at $16 so, we have a big wage discrepancy."

"I know that every member of the team here loves these students, loves this campus and wants it to be a wonderful home and community for students, so they're a great part of our community and we are very happy that they participate in the life of the student."

UMaine Public Affairs Director, Dan Demeritt says they've reached an agreement with two of the six bargaining units, but have not reached an agreement yet with Teamsters.
