PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - The Maine Sunday Telegram has named Sen. Susan Collins "Mainer of the Year."

The newspaper says the Republican senator dominated Maine's news landscape in 2017 even as she was praised and vilified on both sides of the political divide.
The year began with the inauguration of a president she didn't vote for. In the summer, she helped to sink a GOP effort to scuttle the Affordable Care Act, earning cheers from the left. By December, the left was jeering her for supporting a tax overhaul.
She says she likes being in a position to influence events. That's why she stayed in the Senate instead of running for governor. But she also says it's been "very stressful."
This is the first time the newspaper has named a "Mainer of the Year."
