Superbowl champion meets with kids at Bangor hospital

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Kids at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center got a special visit from a former New England Patriot Thursday.

Joe Andruzzi and his wife Jen met with pediatric patients and staff at the Bangor hospital.

The former offensive guard and three-time Super bowl champion signed autographs and gave out footballs.

He also posed for pictures, letting the kids wear his shiny rings.

Andruzzi and his wife founded the Andruzzi Foundation in 2008 to help families who struggle to make ends meet because of a cancer diagnosis.

Andruzzi says, "I started way back in my playing days raising money for brain cancer research, and a year after in 2007, I was calling that doctor for my own help, and you know, God works in funny ways. So, to be able to come up here and support the hospital and cancer institutes throughout New England is truly rewarding and especially rewarding when I'm able to walk into a hospital and get a hug from a complete stranger I've never met before."

The Andruzzi Foundation distributed more than one million dollars to patients and families last year.
