St.Clair talks about RCV on election night

BREWER, Maine (WABI) - Democratic candidate for Maine's Second Congressional District Lucas St. Clair hosted his campaign party at Mason's in Brewer Tuesday.

Deep into the evening things between he and fellow candidate Jared Golden appeared to be neck and neck.

If no candidate grasps a majority of the votes the Ranked Choice process will begin.

"I think that's exactly what the system was designed for," said St. Clair. "To have what turns out to be three candidates vying for this job and to let voters be able to rank them, I think gives everyone the peace of mind that they don't have to be strategic in the way they vote but they can prioritize them in the people that they think would be best for the job and we're going to see it play out. I think the sooner the results are known the sooner we can all get to work and kind of coalesce and get around one candidate. So, I do secretly hope that, or not so secretly hope that that's the ultimate result."

If there is no majority winner a courier service will pick up ballots from precincts starting Wednesday morning.

Unofficial results of the Ranked Choice tabulation, according to the Secretary of States office won't be known until as early as next Monday.
