CASTINE, Maine (WABI) Santa is flying in to Castine this weekend...not by sleigh, but by helicopter.
While "Friends of Flying Santa" formed over 20 years ago to make sure Santa visits New England's lighthouses and coast guard units, it's a tradition that actually started long ago.
It began in 1929 in recognition of lighthouse keepers and their families.
There are now more than 30 stops including 61 Coast Guard units from Maine to New York.
This year, Saint Nick will arrive at Fort George State Park in Castine on Saturday sometime after 10 am and will stay for about an hour.
