Ranked-choice voting processing begins in Poliquin-Golden battle

AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - The counting has begun in the first Congressional race in American history to be decided by a voting method that allows second choices.

The race between Republican Bruce Poliquin and Democrat Jared Golden is close, with Poliquin holding an edge of about 1,900 votes with about 20 precincts still to report election results.

So it's high unlikely either candidate will reach 50%.

Secretary of State Matt Dunlap is pleased with the process so far.

"It's gone quite smoothly," says Dunlap. "We've been very lucky with the weather; it's been pretty calm so far. We anticipate the courier could have just about everything in by tonight."

He says the results will be released as early as next week.
