Proposed Bill Seeks to Fund Mental Health Staffing at Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center

AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) - A bill before lawmakers seeks to maintain mental health staffing at Dorothea Dix Psychiatric Center in Bangor.

Funding for six Mental Health Workers would be provided.

Representative Richard Malaby, of Hancock, proposed the bill.

He says it comes in response to the LePage administration's call for more Mental Health Workers at the center.

Malaby says his bill would help establish continuity among caregivers and their patients, which he says is needed for interacting with people with severe mental illnesses.

"We found the money through savings within the department and we want to use it to extend those people and make them more permanent. So six more Mental Health 1 Workers at Dorothea Dix, quite a simple bill," said Malaby (R).

He says the measure has strong bipartisan support. He expects it to pass without difficulty.
