BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Police are investigating after getting complaints about stealing mail from local businesses.

Police say this could be the resurgence of a fraud scheme from 2017.

They say this morning around 9, witnesses told Hampden police the male passenger of a black SUV with New York plates took business checks from a mailbox.

Hampden police say several other businesses have had checks taken as well.

A short time later, an undercover Bangor officer saw a black SUV approach several individuals on the street.

Police say it is a rental vehicle from Georgia.

In 2017, Bangor police investigated a fraud and kidnapping case involving an Atlanta based group that was stealing checks from businesses and getting locals to cash the checks at local banks.

Police believe the homeless and transients are recruited to do this.

Businesses and banks have been warned and people are urged to be on the lookout for the SUV, a black GMC with Maryland plates 7DH8293.
