BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Bangor officials are considering making changes to the zoning of ground floor spaces in some downtown areas.

The new ordinance would limit what could be developed as residential space to allow for more businesses to find property in the area.

The amendment to the current code would only impact the buildings located in the major commercial area of downtown.

The area that is included in this proposed ordinance is as follows:

[1] Broad Street between West Market Square and Washington Street.
[2] Columbia Street between Hammond Street and Middle Street.
[3] Central Street between Harlow Street and Hammond Street.
[4] Exchange Street between State Street and Washington Street.
[5] Hammond Street between Court Street and the Kenduskeag Stream.
[6] Harlow Street between State Street and Spring Street.
[7] Main Street between Union Street and Hammond Street.
[8] Merchant’s Plaza between West Market Square and Water Street.
[9] Pickering Square.
[10] State Street between Broadway and the Kenduskeag Stream.
[11] West Market Square.

City officials say the ordinance will be modified and discussed further before it's sent to city council for approval.
