New program geared to help students and job seekers learn about trades

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Careers in the trade industries were showcased in Bangor Wednesday.

Works for Me is a program to encourage job seekers and students to explore their trade career options.

The kick-off event was this morning at Eastern Maine Community College.

Employers and workers were able to speak with people about what they do and how they got started.

Organizers say there is a lot to offer right here in Maine that people may not be aware of.

"To make people more aware of the trades and that there's good jobs in the trades and bring in the younger people to the industries, the construction industries and the trade industries and keeping them right here in Maine," said Janette Giles, VP of N.S. Giles Foundations.

Organizers hope the program will encourage young people to take advantage of the thousands of jobs becoming available as the baby boomer generation retires over the next decade.
