NY man accused of cashing bad checks in Maine, other states appears in court

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - A man from New York accused of cashing bad checks in several states - including Maine - appeared in federal court in Bangor Thursday.

54-Year-old Mark Pignatello was arrested in Newport in October.

Police say he tried to cash fake checks in Newport, Orono and Bangor.

We're told he went to multiple People's United Banks with false identification and made off with about $3,000 in Orono.

Pignatello was initially facing state charges.

But because he has similar cases against him in New Hampshire and Connecticut, he's now facing federal charges.

Among the counts against him, bank fraud, identity theft and misrepresentation of social security numbers.

Other states could be pursuing him, too.

Pignatello is due back in court next week for a detention hearing.
