Mid-coast region elects first female, democrat as district attorney

BELFAST, Maine (WABI) - Election history made in the mid-coast.

Natasha Irving has been elected as the new district attorney for four counties in the region.

She's the first female and first Democrat to win that post since the position was established in 1972.

Irving beat incumbent Republican Jonathan Lieberman.

She says she hopes to implement real criminal justice reform with community-based restorative justice.

Irving says she's happy to join the movement of more women in political positions in the state and the country.

"It's also a really great thing to be a role model for my girls but also for girls and women in the community that can see that a girl from Waldoboro can work hard, do her best, and work for justice and really make big waves and make a difference."

The district covers Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, and Waldo Counties.
