BELFAST, Maine (WABI) - A man from Kennebunk who scammed more than $500,000 from people in Waldo and York Counties has been sentenced to six years in prison.
64-year-old Robert Howarth was also ordered last week to pay $575,000 in restitution.
He pleaded guilty in December.
Howarth moved from Massachusetts to the Belfast area in 2009.
Court documents say he stole the money by asking people to invest in his clothing business with the promise of a significant return.
Seventeen people in Waldo County fell victim to the scam.
He also targeted a couple in York County when he moved to Kennebunk.
Howarth was arrested in New Jersey in 2016 and brought back to Maine to be prosecuted.
