WISCASSET, Maine (WABI) - The man accused of murdering his step daughter in Stockton Springs last week was hospitalized after being attacked in jail.

Julio Carrillo and his wife Sharon are charged in connection with the death of their 10 year old daughter, Marissa Kennedy.

Court documents revealed she endured months of abuse at the hands of her mother and stepfather.

According to Waldo County Sheriff Jeff Trafton, Julio Carrillo was assaulted by another inmate Saturday afternoon at the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset.

Carrillo and Paul Andrews of Jackson were being housed in a special management portion of the jail. Andrews is now charged with assault and criminal threatening.

Carrillo was transported and treated for his injuries before being returned to jail. His attorney, Steve Peterson says he plans to meet with Carrillo Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, Sharon Carrillo's lawyer says she should be released on bail because he fears for her safety in jail.

Chris MacLean contends Sharon did not abuse her daughter and may have made false statements to police about her involvement in the death of Marissa in order to protect Julio.

MacLean is questioning the state's investigation and says Sharon is also a victim of abuse.

He hasn't filed a request for bail to be reviewed but plans to do so soon.
