Maine officials will host a hearing about an appeal of a contract to serve as the state's cannabis consultant.

The state Department of Administrative and Financial Services announced in December it had selected BOTEC Analysis of Los Angeles to help write the rules for legalized recreational marijuana. Another bidder, Freedman & Koski Inc. of Colorado, appealed the award later in the month.

Finance department acting deputy commissioner Dick Thompson says that hearing has been scheduled for the week of Feb. 26. Thompson says BOTEC's contract with the state is essentially on hold until the appeals process is over. That could potentially delay the implementation of the rules.

Voters approved recreational marijuana at the polls in 2016, but the process of crafting state rules and regulations has been time consuming.
