Madison man charged in connection with deadly Winslow car crash

WINSLOW, Maine (WABI) - A man from Madison is now charged in connection with a deadly car crash in Winslow last month.

36-year-old Nicholas Smith was arrested Wednesday and charged with causing a death while his license was suspended and filing a false report.

Smith's friend, 52-year-old Gabriel Stuart of Waterville, was driving on Augusta Road when he veered off and slammed into some trees.

Police say Smith was in another vehicle following Stuart and both of them were speeding.

Stuart's girlfriend, 29-year old Tiffany Hulburt, and her baby were trapped in his vehicle, too.

Stuart died at the scene.

Hulburt and the baby were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries and later released.

The police chief says Smith didn't run Stuart off the road and it's not a case of road rage.

But he says both drivers were playing around behind the wheel.
