BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - First graders at Abraham Lincoln School in Bangor were gifted free books Wednesday, courtesy of the Maine Education Association.

MEA's president Grace Leavitt delivered them herself.

The organization is giving a free book to all public school first-grade students across the state.

This is the fifth year they have made the donation.

50 books went to the students of the Bangor school.

"An elementary school teacher said to me a couple of weeks ago that students up to grade two are learning to read and then after that, they are reading to learn," said Leavitt. "So, learning is obviously what we are all about at the MEA and wanting all of our students to have the same opportunities to learn and learn well."

The MEA purchased the books with grants, including a Read Across America grant funded by the National Education Association.
