Lawmakers defeat bill that would have eliminated tip credit

AUGUSTA, Maine (WABI) In a bipartisan vote today, the Maine House defeated a proposed bill that would have eliminated the tip credit for restaurant workers making less than minimum wage.

The tip credit had been reinstated two years ago after servers and restaurant workers convinced lawmakers it was not beneficial to those trying to make a living wage.

The tip credit allows tipped workers, who earn half the minimum wage, to earn the rest of their salary with tips.

Some restaurant owners said if the tip credit had been eliminated, their businesses could have been in jeopardy.
