LUBEC, Maine (WABI) - The historic brining shed in Lubec collapsed into the water during Thursday's blizzard.
It was the last standing herring smokehouse in the country.
Those who live in the area say the building had been in disrepair for quite some time, leaving it vulnerable to the elements.
The brining shed took a big hit during last year's blizzard as well.
Lubec Landmarks attempted to rescue it, raising funds to repair the shed and lift it up on taller pilings.
Ultimately, Thursday's storm proved to be too powerful.
Locals say it's a sad loss for the community.
