High court rejects appeal of former Belgrade man in prison for sexually assaulting girl

BELGRADE, Maine (WABI) - A former Belgrade man will continue to serve seven years in prison for giving alcohol to an 11-year-old girl and sexually assaulting her.

The state's highest court ruled Thursday 24-year-old Travis Gerrier was competent to stand trial.

Gerrier, who's also from Dixmont, appealed that issue to the Maine Supreme Court.

He was sentenced in October of last year.

At the time, Gerrier's lawyer said he had the judgment skills of an 11-or-12-year-old.

Gerrier entered conditional guilty pleas.

He would have been able to withdraw those pleas if he'd won his appeal.

Police found him with the girl in June of 2015 after she was reported missing.

They say Gerrier gave her alcohol, then assaulted her in a portable toilet in a parking lot in North Belgrade.
